According to the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality, here are the top 10 ways to waste less and save energy:
- Reduce driving. Carpool, use public transportation, walk, or bicycle instead. You will not only reduce air emissions which create harmful pollution, you will also save money.
- Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. Compared to standard incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescents use up to 75% less energy, produce just as much light, and last ten times longer.
- Use double-sided photocopying or printing whenever possible.
- Use e-mail instead of paper copies whenever possible. Attaching files to e-mails instead of printing the information can potentially eliminate considerable paper usage.
- Recycle old cell phones. More than 100 million cell phones are taken out of service each year in the U.S. Most of these discarded phones end up in landfills.
- Recycle paper. Each ton of paper recycled prevents 60 pounds of air pollution, and saves 17 trees and 7,000 gallons of water.
- Recycle plastic beverage containers and aluminum cans. Making new cans with recycled aluminum uses 95% less energy than making cans using aluminum from virgin ore.
- Conserve energy by adjusting your thermostat. In the warm months, each degree setting above 72 reduces the amount of electricity used by your central air conditioning system by three percent.
- On cold but sunny days, open the drapes and blinds to let in the sun’s free heat. On hot summer days, keep drapes and blinds closed.
- Buy recycled content products because recycling saves energy, conserves resources, prevents air and water pollution, and creates jobs.
