The First Appointment

The first appointment with the counselor is an initial consultation. The purpose of the initial consultation is to gather detailed information about what prompted you to schedule the appointment.

The Counseling Center offers short-term, goal focused counseling. We us a flexible care model to address various problems and concerns. At the conclusion of the initial consultation, the counselor will identify the appropriate next steps and discuss the best treatment options available to you for your specific concerns.

The flexible care model includes the following options:

  • Connections with UNK resources that support academic success
  • Informational online self-help resources
  • Referral to the practicum clinic in the UNK Counseling & School Psychology Department
  • Single session consultation for immediate problem-solving
  • Intensive individual weekly counseling sessions at the UNK Counseling Center
  • Individual counseling sessions every other week or monthly basis
  • Participation in a therapeutic group
  • Referral to a community mental health provider for open-ended therapeutic treatment
  • Referral to a medical provider for psychiatric consultation
