The First Appointment

It isn't always easy to ask for help or tell someone about your concerns. We hope to make your first appointment with us as welcoming and collaborative as possible. We invite you to ask any questions you might have. The intake appointment provides time for you to get acquainted with the counselor and discuss the reasons you are seeking counseling. Information will be gathered regarding your history and confidentiality/client rights will be discussed. You and your counselor will also talk about your expectations of counseling. Sometimes an intake session is all that is required to alleviate your concerns and other times it may take a few sessions to resolve the issue. You and the counselor will talk about the best options for you. This might mean your next appointment will be with a different counselor who specializes in the issue you are working through, or maybe a referral to a provider in the community.

Making Your First Appointment

All services at UNK Counseling are by appointment. Please call us at (308) 865-8248 to schedule an appointment or stop by our office between the hours of 8am and 5 pm, located in the Memorial Student Affairs Building, room 144. If you or someone you know is at risk of harm to self and/or others, please let our front desk staff know when you call or come by the office.

The first appointment will take approximately 90 minutes. This will give you time to complete the intake paperwork so that the counselor can review it ahead of time. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND you complete the intake paperwork, LEC 5, and the informed consent ahead of time and bring it with you to your first appointment so that you have more time to meet with the counselor. The intake paperwork is located on our website or you can come to the UNK Counseling office to pick it up ahead of time.

Please note, if you are 15 minutes late to the first appointment, you may be asked to reschedule in the next available opening.
