Your initial counseling session provides time for you to get acquainted with your counselor and discuss reasons you are seeking counseling. Information will be gathered regarding your history and confidentiality/patients rights will be discussed. You and your counselor will also talk about expectations of counseling. Sometimes an initial session is all that is required and the issue can be solved within the first session. At other times it may take a few sessions to resolve the issue. You and the counselor will talk about the best counselor fit for you and this may mean that your next appointment will be with someone specialized in the issue you are working through or maybe a referral into the community. If you and the counselor decide to continue working together then a plan will be developed and goals for counseling will be defined.
