Office 2007 is the latest release of Microsoft’s productivity suite for Windows including Word 2007, Excel 2007, PowerPoint 2007, and Outlook 2007.
A major change in the Office Suite is the format in which files are saved. Earlier versions of Office applications save documents with the following file extensions, which are compatible across PC or MAC operating systems and programs:
Office 2007 bases its file formats on XML, and has changed the default file extensions:
These new file extensions are currently not compatible across operating systems, nor are they backwards compatible with earlier versions of Office. For example, you might be working on a document with someone who has an earlier version of Office. For this reason, the 2007 Office relase still allows you to save files in binary format. For information about the advantages of the new file formats, see the Microsoft Office Online site.
