4-Year Career Development Plan

First Year – Assess and Explore 

¨         Visit us to take a career interest assessment 

¨         Explore majors and careers that reflect your interests: 

                Ÿ Conduct Informational Interviews

                Ÿ Visit Academic and Career Services to meet with an advisor 

¨         Clarify interests/values with a variety of classes, clubs, part-time jobs, or community service 

¨         Begin your résumé / portfolio file; keep documentation of all accomplishments 

   

Second Year – Assess and Plan 

¨         Re-evaluate skills, interests, values 

¨         Continue career research (on-line, workshops, informational interviews, visit a career advisor) 

¨         Develop short- and long-term educational goals 

¨         Develop relationships with faculty and career advisors 

¨         Assume leadership positions in student organizations  

¨         Volunteer or find a summer job / internship that is related to a career choice. 

   

Third Year –Refine and Analyze Career Decisions 

¨         Relate skills, interests, values to 2 or 3 careers. 

¨         Assess and refine career goals 

¨         Develop a professional résumé 

¨         Network with professionals in your area of interest 

¨         Obtain a career-related internship 

¨         Explore post-graduation options:  graduate study, employment, community service, etc. 

¨         Attend Career Fairs – on-campus and others 

   

Fourth Year – Realize Your Goals 

¨         Consult a career advisor to develop a job search strategy 

¨         Utilize both the hidden and visible job markets  

¨         Have your résumé critiqued by a career advisor 

¨         Intensify networking; attend events hosted by your department or by Academic & Career Services 

¨         Research companies and / or graduate schools 

¨         Register for loperCAREERS* 

¨         Schedule a practice interview with a career advisor 

¨         Establish a LinkedIn* account to help you build and organize your network of connections 

¨         Ask faculty and internship supervisors to serve as references 

¨         Participate in career fairs and on-campus interviews
