Like so many other students, "Jane" experienced firsthand the opportunities facilitated by her degree in Sociology, a degree that is suited well to a multitude of career paths.
"Doors really started opening up for me after I decided to pursue my Sociology degree," said Dr. Suzanne Maughan, chair of the Sociology department. "I had exciting opportunities presented to me upon graduation and even some very attractive job offers. I ultimately decided to continue my education in Sociology. Now I have the opportunity to share that passion with my students."
Dr. Maughan cites a 2007 study that followed several hundred Sociology graduates through the beginnings of their careers. The results are reflective of the overall diversity of the field.

At UNK, almost half of Sociology students choose to move up to graduate school. This trend is reflective of the department's success in preparing students for acceptance to advanced educational programs. UNK students who choose to enter the job market immediately upon graduation often find jobs relatively quickly.
How much will I make?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, starting salaries for Sociology graduates are typically higher than those of comparable degrees. The median income is between $50,000 and $60,000 per year. Employment is expected to grow steadily with the national average for similar positions.
