Greetings and Welcome to Social Work

The Social Work Program at the University of Nebraska at Kearney commends your interest in one of the fastest growing and most meaningful professions of the twenty first century.  Social work is more than a profession; it is a calling and a personal mission that compels ordinary individuals to make extraordinary efforts aimed at creating a more compassionate, moral, and inclusive society.

Social work students are the best of what society has to offer.  They possess a strong personal commitment to serving individuals, families, groups, and communities.  This commitment is fortified with a generalist educational foundation that is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and delivered at the hands of dedicated faculty.  Students are armed with a wide range of knowledge, practice skills, and a strong professional Code of Ethics that empower them to make a difference in the lives of people and improve the responsiveness of societal institutions.

Social work is everywhere.   Baccalaureate social work graduates are employed in a variety of settings that include child welfare and family services, youth residential treatment facilities, elder care programs, addiction and mental health services, domestic violence programs, corrections, and many more (check our web page for a more complete listing).  Social workers are highly desired for their people-skills in business, government, and numerous other leadership positions.

Why Social Work?  Because of the great shortage for social workers across the country and the compounding social conditions that demand a unique combination of knowledge, practice skills, and strong values that no other academic preparation or profession provides.  To give a voice to society's most vulnerable, to advocate for the inclusion of those overlooked and left behind, and to create solutions to perplexing social challenges where others see none.  The endless rationale for such a professional choice can be endless and lead to an equally compelling question, why not social work?

Looking for a strong educational background and much more?   You've found the perfect program to get the most education from some the best educators around, to form lifelong friendships, and to uncover your capacity to make a meaningful difference in society.  The Social Work Program at UNK is the place to be and our faculty looks forward to a personal visit with you or an opportunity to provide you with further information. Best wishes for a promising future that begins at the University of Nebraska at Kearney Social Work Program.

Social work, what are you waiting for?

                            Sincerely,

                            Maha Younes, Ph.D., LCSW, LMHP
