A Major in Political Science
The major, supplemented by a careful selection of general education and elective courses, provides a valuable mix of skills, knowledge, and perspectives that enable students to succeed in careers such as:
- Law. Political Science provides essential preparation for those who wish to study the law and for those who plan to go to law school.
- Public Administration. Well-trained public servants are vital for all governments. Our Political Science majors find opportunities in all facets of public service. Some positions will require further study at the graduate level.
- Political Staff. Political Science majors may find professional positions in political campaigns, the staffs of office-holders, and general legislative staffs.
- Business. In a mixed, global economy, careers in business require a thorough knowledge of domestic and international politics. With its focus on these dimensions, and its emphasis on problem-solving, effective communication, and critical/analytical thinking, Political Science provides a solid foundation for careers in business and business management. Many Political Science majors hold positions in business, and go on to earn a graduate M.B.A. degree.
- Education. A Political Science major prepares student for careers in education at various levels, although additional training is required. For secondary education, broader education and social science courses are necessary, and for college/university level teaching, a Ph.D. is required.
- Military Service. Political Science is highly relevant to careers in military service (as an officer).
- Community Service/Public Affairs. Community service and public affairs (e.g. various interest groups) employers value Political Science majors with research skills, abilities in analysis and communication, and knowledge of political institutions and processes.
- Journalism/Public Relations. Political Science preparation involving knowledge of government, politics, policy, and law, coupled with writing and communications skills benefit students interested in careers in journalism and public relations. This makes the combination of Political Science major/minor and Journalism/Communications major /minor a useful association.
A Major in Political Science may take the form of a General B.A. or B.S. degree in Political Science or one of two career-oriented concentrations; majors are strongly encouraged to consider their career interests in choosing one of these options.
