Spyware programs install themselves on PC's, with or without the user's knowledge. They collect personal information about Web-surfing habits and can capture private information, like passwords and banking information. Both spyware and adware deliver targeted advertising based on acquired information. The pop-up windows and ad banners on your system result from spyware. Multiple spyware programs on your computer will make it run very slowly.
The Helpdesk recommends Spybot and Malwarebytes, which is free for students at http://www.download.com, to remove spyware and adware. These anti-malware and spyware removal programs, when updated and run weekly, will clean out problem software and allow your PC to run more efficiently.
UNK advises all email users to beware of "phishing" messages. If you receive an email message or pop-up message that appears to come from a business or organization, such as a bank or eBay, requesting validation of account information, do not respond. There may be a link to a Web site that looks legitimate, but the purpose is to collect personal information from you. This information can be utilized for identity theft, to run up bills in your name, or to commit crimes in your name. Do not click on links in these messages.
Facebook and MySpace
Social networking services, like Facebook and MySpace, are popular with our students. Students create personal profiles, post photos, and exchange messages with friends. Information posted to Facebook or MySpace may be accessible to University authorities, prospective employers, police or even stalkers. We recommend restricting access to personal information.
