The UNK Honor Band & Choral Clinic is a musical and educational event held on a Monday in late January each year. The Clinic features two concert bands and three choirs, which rehearse all day, then present a concert in the evening. The Honor Band is usually directed by the Director of Bands at UNK, and the Festival Band is usually directed by the Assistant Director of Bands at UNK. The Honor Choir is usually directed by the Director of Choirs at UNK, and the Festival Choir and Women’s Choir are directed by well-known and talented choral directors from secondary schools, colleges, and universities. Occasionally, a guest director of national acclaim will be asked to direct a band or a choir. As the students rehearse the music during the day, they receive important music instruction about making music and proper performing techniques that they can take back with them to their schools as they rehearse and perform with some of the best students in the region.

Students in the public and private high schools in Nebraska, western Colorado, northern Kansas, and western Iowa in grades 10-12 are invited to audition for the Clinic. Audition music is put on this website for downloading as a PDF. After the student rehearse the music, music directors record the audition. The audition is then mailed to the Clinic Director on a cassette tape or on a CD-R, or sent as a digital audio file attached to an email to the Clinic Director in November. The students selected for inclusion in one of the Clinic ensembles are notified through the website and through an email to their music director. The fee for the Clinic is $25.00 per participant, which includes the noon meal. The fees are paid to UNK in one school check prior to the Clinic. The music the student will sing or play is mailed to the school in December to give participants an opportunity to learn their parts before the Clinic.

Students arrive at the Clinic at 8:00 a.m. to register and start rehearsals. The concert takes place in the 5,000-seat Health & Sports Center Arena next to the Fine Arts Building at 6:00 p.m.

If you would like more information, or to be included in the emailing of information, please send a memo to Dr. James F. Payne (paynej@unk.edu), Director of the UNK Honor Clinic.
