Residence Halls

Wireless connectivity is available throughout the campus including every resident hall.

All residence hall rooms are also equipped with two high-speed network data jacks.  Computers need an Ethernet cable (RJ45 cat5e).

Contact the Helpdesk at 308-865-8363 for assistance in connecting your computer to the UNK network.  The helpdesk staff provides connectivity troubleshooting and Internet application support.  Students may be asked to bring their CPU or laptop to the Helpdesk for hardware support.  The Helpdesk does not troubleshoot problems with printers, modems, disk drives, or non-network-related software or hardware.

Students are required to authenticate on the residence hall network with their UNK email username and password.

Off Campus

If you live off campus and need Internet access, you must have an Internet Service Provider (ISP).  Dial-up service, cable modems, DSL, and broadband wireless are all available in the Kearney area.

P2P/Games

UNK provides high-speed Internet access for all students in the residence halls and for all computer labs.  We manage the amount of traffic going to and coming from the Internet, so peer-to-peer applications may not work well.  Internet-based games may need to be adjusted on a case-by-case basis to function properly.  Contact the Helpdesk at 308-865-8663 for more information.

Peer-to-peer applications allow users to open their computers to the Internet and participate in large-scale file sharing.  Users may illegally acquire copyrighted materials and then illegally distribute those copyrighted files.  Sharing copyrighted files without permission can result in legal action by the copyright holders.  Federal law requires the University of Nebraska at Kearney to take immediate action when notified that someone on our network is distributing copyrighted materials.

Disabling Peer-to-Peer

The University of Nebraska at Kearney discourages the use of peer-to-peer applications for sharing copyrighted materials.  You should remove peer-to-peer applications from your system to insure you do not violate copyright law.

If you do not remove the application, you need to IMMEDIATELY disable fire-sharing to prevent the application form acting as a server and thus a provider of unlicensed materials.

Information on how to disable file sharing for many peer-to-peer applications can be found here

Student Web Pages

UNK students can create their own web pages.  Server space is given to students after a Student Web Directory Application has been completed.  This application may be obtained at the Helpdesk in Otto Olsen 115.
