UNK Semester Abroad Peru


The University of Nebraska-Kearney offers the ability for 20 students to participate in a semester abroad in Peru. Located in the capital city of Lima, Peru students will attend Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC) and earn 12 UNK Spanish credit hours. For about the same cost as studying/living on campus, students will not only improve their Spanish proficiency but they will be immersed in Peruvian life. Students will live with a carefully selected housing family and participated in organized fieldtrips within Peru and various activities.

Language Prerequisite: Successful completion of SPAN 204 and/or a native heritage speaker 

UNK Courses

  • Advanced Grammar- 3 credit hours - taught in Spanish by a UPC Professor
  • Advanced Conversation and Composition - 3 credit hours - taught in Spanish by a UPC Professor
  • Indigenous Cultures - 3 credit hours(required)
    - taught in English or Spanish contingent on UNK Faculty Lead.
    - includes Peru 'Field Experience' 
  • Peruvian Literature - 3 credit hours - taught in Spanish by a UPC Professor
  • UNK Online Course (your choice) - 3 credit hours - Online courses can be substituted for SPAN 303, 304, and/or 376/476 if proven necessary.

* If the above credits have already been earned, alternate upper lever SPAN credit may be assigned.

Program Cost

The cost of the program is $7,175* for UNK students, which includes a pre-departure orientation, 12 hours tuition of UNK undergraduate resident tuition + fees, housing, 2 meals a day, study abroad health insurance, and tour guide / transportation / lodging / admittance tickets for program related field trips to: 

  • Machu Picchu (one of the 7 Wonders of the World)
  • Cusco
  • Paracas
  • And additional activities to be determined. 

* - Based on an estimate of 12 UNK undergraduate credit hours earned off-campus during the Spring 2015 semester at the Nebraska resident tuition rate. This amount will vary if you are a non-resident UNK student or if you decide to take more than 12 credits or online courses while abroad.

Financial Aid

Most scholarships and grants can be used to fund this venture and financial assistance in the form of students loans is available.


The program is open to all students enrolled in the University of Nebraska system. Students should have successfully completed SPAN 204:Culture, Conversation and Writing,  or be a native heritage speaker, have a 2.5 GPA and one semester of college experience. 

Credit Transfer

All students will register through the University of Nebraska-Kearney for a minimum of twelve credit hours (listed above). All students without a NUID, will be required to apply as a non-degree seeking student at UNK through the Office of Admissions (308.865.8702). Credits earned may be applied toward degree work at the students' home campus through the transfer process.

Application Deadline

The last Friday of February and acceptance on a rolling basis as group size allows.
