International Student Scholarship

University of Nebraska Kearney

Policy and Procedures

Purpose: The International Student Scholarship (ISScholarship) program at the University of Nebraska Kearney is intended to recognize outstanding academic performance of international students.  Additionally, the review committee will consider the contribution of applicants to extra curricular activities on campus and in the community.  The scholarships are tuition waivers, which pay a portion of an international student’s tuition during the period of award.  Awards are made for the academic year.

Application Procedures:

  • ISScholarships are awarded to students who are admitted as international students. Typically a student will have to accumulate a minimum of 24 undergraduate or 18 graduate UNK credit hours before becoming eligible to submit a scholarship application. Students are no longer eligible for scholarships after completing 125 undergraduate or 30 graduate UNK credit hours. The minimal cumulative grade point average for consideration is 2.8.
  • Applications for scholarships should be submitted to the UNK Office of International Student Services by March 1st.
  • A committee that is responsible for final award decisions based on available funds reviews applications.
  • Selection for the scholarship will be primarily based on academic performance of the applicant.  However, participation to campus and community life will be a secondary factor.
  • Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an academic year, but are renewable under terms and conditions outlined in the scholarship offer.  Students will be notified if they have failed to meet the renewal criteria.  Students will not be notified if their scholarship is renewed.
  • If an ISScholarship recipient receives another tuition waiver from the University of outside agency, the amount of the ISScholarship grant will be reduced so the student’s total tuition costs are not exceeded by the combination.
  • ISScholarship awards are based on full-time enrollment.  Enrollment status is verified on the last day of drop and adds.  The ISScholarship award will be cancelled if the student is not full-time by the last day of drop and add.

Applications for ISScholarships are available after February 1 in the Office of Financial Aid, Memorial Student Affairs Building, or the Office of International Student Services, Welch Hall.  Or you may print the following forms for your convenience.  Attach your essay to the application.  You may also request references from faculty or other UNK personnel who are familiar with your performance.  Please limit your references to two.  Funds are allocated before summer break for the coming academic year.  You will receive half of your award amount for the Fall semester and half for the Spring semester.
