Health Insurance Requirement for International Students

I. Policy on Mandatory Health Insurance for International Students

All international students on J and F visa status or any other temporary visa not employment-related MUST have a health insurance policy during the time they are in the U.S. that meets the university’s minimum insurance standards (See below, Section II). International students on these visa types will be automatically enrolled in the UNK- Student Assurance Services Health policy when they enroll at the University. The cost of the insurance policy will be charged to the student’s tuition account and is the student’s responsibility. This charge will not be refunded unless a waiver request has been and approved by the deadline date.

II. Insurance Standards for International Students

Students seeking a waiver (exemption) from the UNK-Student Assurance health policy must show proof of alternative health insurance that MUST include the certain minimum requirements.

These minimum health insurance requirements are:

$50,000 major medical

$7,500 repatriation of remains

$10,000 medical evacuation

Deductible limit of $500

III. Waiver Information

If you already have health insurance that you believe meets the University of Nebraska Kearney’s minimum standards, you may request a WAIVER from purchasing the University of Nebraska Kearney-sponsored health insurance plan.

To waive student health insurance coverage and receive a refund to your student account for the insurance charge, you must complete a waiver at the International Student Services Office and provide information about your current health insurance policy coverage by the waiver deadline which is the 14th day of classes each semester. The information you must provide should be an English-translated copy of your health insurance coverage and include the coverage in U.S. dollar amounts. Health insurance waivers must be applied for each semester you are enrolled at the University of Nebraska Kearney.

Current Rates for 2011 - 2012 Academic Year:

Fall semester $233 (Aug 14 - Jan 8)

Spring semester $317 (Jan 9 - Aug 13)
