UNK is pleased to welcome new international students each semester. The presence of international students enriches the UNK campus and the Kearney community and we are very excited to have you as students of our university.
In order to ensure a smooth transition to life at UNK, we offer orientation activities prior to the start of the academic term. These activities are mandatory for every new international student. The purpose of these activities are to acquaint you with the campus, the community and with U.S. Immigration requirements, and help you learn what it takes to be a successful student at UNK. During this time, you will be given the opportunity to: register for classes, open a bank account, meet professors and other important people who work with students, take care of your vaccination requirements, get a student ID, and most importantly; make new friends!
You are expected to arrive in the USA by the date prior to the first day of scheduled orientation activities. If you must arrive later than this date, contact the International Admissions Office at UNK as soon as possible.
Dates for Spring 2016 Orientation: Thursday, January 7 through Sunday, January 10. Activities will begin at 8:00 am each day. Residence Halls will be open for you to move in Wednesday, January 6.
Please see Student Instructions #2 for detailed information on planning travel from your home country to UNK.
Click on the links below for more detailed information on activities that will occur during your orientation week.
During orientation, you will complete a student information sheet and a member of the orientation team will make copies of your immigration documents.
A member of the orientation team will accompany you to Academic Advising in the Memorial Student Affairs Building and will provide help with registration for fall classes. You will also have the opportunity to speak with academic advisors in order to understand what your program of study will require, and they will also answer any questions you have about the classes you will be taking at UNK.
You will be given an opportunity to have a student ID card made. The ID card office is located in the Nebraskan Student Union, lower level near the front desk.
A member of the orientation team will accompany you to Health Care. While there, you will be able to submit your pre-enrollment health form (if you haven't already completed this step) and receive the required vaccinations as outlined on the pre-arrival documents.
You will be driven to Wells Fargo in order to open a bank account for use while you are at UNK. While at Wells Fargo you will be fed lunch, have an opportunity to meet their personal bankers, and learn about the banking services that Wells Fargo can offer to you.
You will be provided with the opportunity to attend informational sessions where you will learn about life as a UNK student. You will have an opportunity to learn about expectations of professors, immigration requirements for F-1 and J-1 students, student conduct policies, US laws, and counseling and health care services.
During orientation, you will get a firsthand look at the dining service area, the library, the Wellness Center/Exercise facility, and go on a detailed campus tour. You will also be able to tour the buildings in which you will have your classes so that you will not get lost on your first day!
