Students are not required to take an official English placement exam (such as TOEFL) before coming to UNK.
To apply for full admission to the UNK undergraduate program, however, students must score 500 or above on TOEFL, 61 or above on iBT, 5.5 band or above on IELTS, or Grade 2A on STEP EIKEN.
Students who have not yet achieved one of the above scores should apply directly to the UNK English Language Institute (ELI):
ELI is located on the UNK campus and ELI students have full access to UNK library, internet, student services, campus housing, and student activities.
Students with a minimum TOEFL score of 500 on the paper-based test or 61 on the internet-based test (iBT) or IELTS score of 5.5, or minimum STEP EIKEN official test score of Grade 2A before entering the U.S. can enroll in UNK academic classes full time.
All other students must apply to UNK's English Language Institute (ELI). Upon arrival at UNK, ELI students are given the paper-based TOEFL Placement Exam. Students scoring a 470 or above may enroll part-time in UNK classes and part-time in ELI classes. Students scoring below a 470 on the TOEFL placement exam must enroll full-time in ELI.
Q: “What if I did not take an English test” or “my score is too low to apply for the Undergraduate Program … Can I still come to UNK?”
A: Yes! Simply apply to the UNK English Language Institute (there is no English test requirement). When you arrive at UNK, you will be given our TOEFL placement test. If you achieve the 500 TOEFL Score, you will be admitted to the UNK Undergraduate Program. If not, you will be admitted to the English Language Institute and allowed to study English on the UNK campus until you are able to join the undergraduate program (see above).
