Young Artist Competition 2013

COMPETITION DATE: April 27, 2013 - UNK Fine Arts Building
The Kearney Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition seeks to cultivate and promote emerging musical talent from Nebraska and its surrounding states—Iowa, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Wyoming, and South Dakota. It will provide a regional opportunity for students’ achievements to be recognized with prizes and performance opportunities, including the possibility of a performance with KSO.
Congratulations to Emily Shehi (violin - Olathe, KS), winner of the first and grand prizes in the 2012 KSOYAC! She will perform Barber's "Violin Concerto: I. Allegro moderato" with the Kearney Symphony on its February 2013 concert under the baton of Deborah Freedman, director of KSO, at the UNK Fine Arts Building Recital Hall.
PRIZES - (total purse of $3,200)
In this third year of the competition, the competition will be open only to pianists & string players (namely violin, viola, cello, and bass). More than one prize may be awarded to an applicant:
Grand Prize (one winner maximum) - Performance with the Kearney Symphony Orchestra during the 2013-14 season
String Prizes: First Prize - $800 Second Prize - $500 Third Prize - $300
Piano Prizes: First Prize - $800 Second Prize - $500 Third Prize - $300

PERFORMER QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants
to the competition must meet the following conditions:
- Be no
younger than 13 and no older than 18 on the date of the competition
- Perform on piano, violin, viola, cello, or bass
- Have never previously won the first or grand prizes of the KSOYAC
- Compete
with repertoire for which orchestral parts are available
- Play with
piano accompaniment
- Not yet be
a high-school graduate
- Not have studied privately with a jury member in the past year
- Provide
proof of residency in Nebraska or one of its bordering states
- Pay the
application fee of $15 – postmark deadline of March 30, 2013
- Compete
with a complete work (or complete movement from a work) that is at least eight
minutes long
