For the UNK String Program, 2008 began with wonderful news: the National String Project Consortium selected UNK as one of thirty-two String Project Sites throughout the United States. As the only String Project Site in Nebraska, the faculty of the UNK String Project is extremely excited to participate in enhanced string education with our community, and will offer teaching assistantships and stipends for string student-teachers who participate in the project.
Along with the UNK String Project, the Thornton String Quartet continues to represent the UNK Music Department as the principal student chamber ensemble, and offers numerous performance opportunities and generous scholarships for its participants through competitive audition. With the nurturing environment created by the string faculty, more than twenty scholarships for string students, and recently remodeled performance facilities, the UNK String Program has produced the MTNA State Chamber Music Competition winners and the NMTA Collegiate String Competition winner for 2006. UNK offers NASM-accredited BM-Performance, BAEd-Music Education, BM-Music Business and BA-Music degrees with Majors/Emphases for each of the standard string instruments, where students can work with a faculty credentialed by several of the nation’s leading conservatories and universities.
