The Department of the Month for October 2005 is the staff of the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus newspaper  The Antelope.

During the past year, the staff has received many awards.  Just a few of the honors received from the Nebraska Press Women were First Place awards for faculty advisor, mass media research, a poetry book of creative verse, collegiate feature writing, and a First Amendment Pubic Service Announcement; and Second Place awards for collegiate photography, collegiate feature writing, and collegiate sports writing
Among the awards received from the Nebraska Press Association was Third Place in Collegiate Staff General Excellence Awards.

The entire Antelope staff, faculty and students, strive to bring to our campus news that is relevant to the campus as well as articles that cause us to think about the world we live in.  The Faculty takes pride in their responsibilities in serving and teaching their students.  Dr. Beverly Merrick, Antelope advisor states, " If we want young journalists to understand their critical responsibility to serve, we, as college advisors, must set an example by serving actively as citizens and role models ourselves. " The staff strongly advocates the Democratic obligation of the press to serve as the Fourth Branch of government on behalf of the voice of the people.

Congratulations to the Antelope Staff on your excellent work and for being named October 2005 Department of the Month.
