Toby began his duties at the University of Nebraska at Kearney on November of 1998 as a Facilities Operator II. In July of 2000 he was promoted to Refrigeration Control Tech II and then to Building Automation Systems Specialist in August of 2002. In November of 2005 he was promoted to Manager of Utilities and serves in this position at the present time.
The Utilities Operation that Toby manages provides heating and air-conditioning maintenance operations, preventive maintenance of campus boilers, chillers, distribution systems, cooling tower maintenance and related equipment, refrigerant management, energy management, and service contract compliance. This is a department that touches the lives of every single UNK student, staff, and faculty member every day through cooling and heating of all campus buildings. The staff that Toby manages is on call 24 hours a day, so whatever time a problem arises, they are there for the call.
Toby carries out his assigned duties with great efficiency and “teamwork attitudes”. As an example, he will fill in for his employees as a night shift operator whenever the need arises. He delegates tasks in the decision making process and keeps the line of communications open, both with his staff and administration. He leads his staff in the idea of “going above and beyond the call of duty” with the customer’s best interest in mind. Many campus employees have noted that he is always courteous and makes you feel that every call is of highest importance.
Toby has served as the contact person for the large Central Utilities Plant Project that was completed in June of 2009. The contractor’s Project Superintendent described him as an excellent person who is easy to work with, caring, a listener, down to earth, and a common sense kind of guy. The Project Foreman said “I wish we could work with a person like Toby on every one of our projects.”
Toby is a valued employee whose name we are pleased to submit as UNK’s Employee of the Month.
