The Department of the Month for September 2005 is the men of Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity. This organization is comprised of several young Hispanic students who will soon be reaching a chapter status on the UNK campus. They were colonized on campus in April of 2004.
Sigma Lambda Beta has been working to help the UNK campus understand the vast diversity of nationalities and cultures that exist at UNK. Through various fund raisers and events, students and staff have been exposed to the Hispanic culture through food, dance, and conversation. These events have given the UNK campus the opportunity to be better providers to our Hispanic students.
Additionally, Sigma Lambda Beta has been a source of support for our Hispanic students, giving them a resource they can turn to when they need assistance in adjusting to a college campus. One of their chapter philanthropy projects is an adopt a school program with Bryant Elementary School.
The events and actions of Sigma Lambda Beta, is an excellent example of a student organization that supports and encourages diversity on the UNK campus and in the Kearney community. Through efforts such as theirs, the level of acceptance and understanding of others is greatly increased.
