The UNK Staff Senate is pleased to recognized The Department of Teacher Education as the March 2009 Department of the Month. The Department of Teacher Education offers both undergraduate and graduate programs as well as special endorsements for state teachers who are interested in enhancing their skills. The key to the Teacher Education Department lies in its commitment to the principle that teaching is a moral endeavor and that the primary purpose of education in America’s schools is the preparation of our youth for the role of citizen in our social and political democracy. This basic belief forms the foundation of our mission.
Over the past ten years, Teacher Education has completely renewed its programs to meet the needs of P-12 education in Nebraska. Instructors have developed extensive field experiences to provide students with a real feel for the
P-12 classroom. Moreover, they pride themselves on preparing teacher education students for their 21st century classrooms. To provide authentic field experiences, they have developed an extensive network of partnerships with fifty-one different schools (elementary, middle, and high schools) in fourteen school districts in Nebraska. In addition, student’s also have the opportunity to student teach in Houston, Texas. They have also created highly successful online graduate programs for teachers in both Nebraska and across the nation.
Finally, they have established an online transition program so that individuals with non-teaching undergraduate degrees can earn a secondary teaching endorsement in order to help many small schools in Nebraska that are desperately in need for teachers in the areas of English, Spanish, science , and mathematics.
For serving the needs of Nebraska and the Great Plains with quality educational programs the UNK Staff Senate would like to recognized the Department of Teacher Education as the March 2009 Department of the Month!
