Dual Career Program
UNK Department of the Month
December 2008

The UNK Staff Senate is pleased to recognize the Dual Career Program as the December 2008 Department of the Month.  Since June of 1998, the Dual Career Program has been a resource for accompanying partners of new faculty and professional staff who have recently relocated to the Kearney area.  The Dual Career Program has been beneficial because it offers a range of services which relocating partners find useful in planning and executing their own job search. Services offered include:  Up-to-date information about local businesses, networking opportunities, support during the job search and resume and cover letter review.

Though the Dual Career Program does not guarantee employment, relocating partners are encouraged to take full advantage of the services the program offers.  These services are available for up to two years from the point that the person relocates to Kearney.   In addition, the Dual Career Program has provided career coaching appointments to those who are part of a reduction in force at UNK or a department restructuring and to those who join the Kearney branch of UNMC.

During the last 10 years, the Dual Career Program has helped over 332 individuals. Most individuals have obtained some employment within 6 months of asking for assistance.  This has been accomplished by maintaining a close working relationship with the Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce and other local professional organizations.  The program has been so successful that Varner Hall is now trying to pattern a similar program.  The UNK Dual Career Program has received national recognition through the research efforts of the previous Director and it continues to refine its’ purpose and mission with the current director.  Every applicant to a position at UNK receives information about the Dual Career Program and many applicants comment on how great it is to have this resource available to them and how unique it is during their job search efforts.

It is through the efforts of the Dual Career Program Director that UNK has been successful in recruiting and retaining several of our valuable faculty and staff members, therefore the UNK Staff Senate would like to recognize the Dual Career Program as the December 2008 Department of the Month!

Thank you to the sponsors of the Department of the Month: UNK Athletics and Staff Senate.
