The UNK Staff Senate is pleased to recognize the Writing Center as the August 2008 UNK Department of the Month. The Writing Center offers free one-on-one consultations to all students, faculty, and staff at any stage of the writing process. Clients have the choice of face-to-face or live on-line tutorials. The center opened in the fall of 1993 and is a member of the Nebraska Writing Centers Consortium. Director, Amanda Granrud, oversees a staff of undergraduate and graduate writers from various disciplines. These tutors are trained in the teaching of writing. The tutors look at papers and help clients identify options for improving them. Students can receive help in such areas as generating and supporting ideas, developing a thesis argument, organizing main points, forming clear sentences, citing sources, and editing for grammar and punctuation. Tutors at the center help students improve their papers; they don’t improve the papers for them. Writing Center tutors help visitors identify new options for drafting and revising papers. Each semester, over 1,000 students representing all UNK colleges visit the center.
The Writing Center hires tutors who enjoy writing and talking about writing, seeking individuals who will be substantive, constructive, and supportive in offering suggestions to clients. The center is open seven days a week.
The Writing Center contributes to the excellence of the campus in several ways. Clients benefit from tutors trained to help with their writing. Effective writing is crucial to success in college. High priority is given to incorporating cutting edge developments in tutoring writing. The result is an excellent opportunity for members of the UNK community which is why the UNK Staff Senate would like to recognize the Writing Center as the August 2008 UNK Department of the Month.
