The Center for Academic Success is the Department of the Month for April. The department offers coordinated services between Student Support Services and the Learning Strategies Office. The combined offices serve students, staff and faculty seeking assistance or information on how to be better equipped, or how to better equip others, to achieve academic success at UNK. The department provides mentoring, tutoring, advising, special needs accommodations, and special topic courses such as study skills, time management, test anxiety and more.
The peer tutoring program that is managed under this department assists students who struggle with comprehension or clarification in a variety of general study courses. The tutors often extend their weekly hours to accommodate UNK students, and staff members routinely rearrange their schedules to accommodate students who drop in for assistance.
In addition, the staff often works with current and prospective students and their parents to research options a student may have to meet their needs. Thus, the staff works to ensure that all students are given the necessary opportunities and tools to be successful.
The Center for Academic Success has provided numerous resources for students including piloting a new special topic class on time management, networking with the FYI courses, creating a computer learning lab area for students, proctoring make-up exams for faculty and assisting students with disabilities in creating accommodation letter for their classes.
Without the Center for Academic Success, the retention and success of many qualified students would not be achieved.
