The Employee of the Month for April is Corliss Sullwold, assistant director of International Education/Student Advisor. In her position as assistant director of International Education/Student Advisor, Corliss helps students solve immigration problems and deal with visa issues, always going beyond her job description to help students find on-campus jobs, work with academic problems and deal with any family problems that might arise. As such, she is more than a member of the UNK staff to international students. She is a friend, family member and someone they know they can trust. Students often just stop by to say "Hello."
International students often arrive on campus with only their suitcases in hand. Corliss is known for helping the students with everything from how to call a taxi and driving classes to jobs and graduate schools. Last Thanksgiving, when a number of international students had no one to share the holiday with, Corliss prepared a Thanksgiving meal for them.
Although she routinely arrives at the office before 8 a.m., Corliss often can be found working in her campus office during the weekends or evenings to assist international students with their programs. She is an advisor to the Japanese Association of Kearney (JAK) and the International Student Association (ISA). Through those associations, she motivates students to take leadership positions, grow as individuals and develop skills they will need as professionals in their fields. She also participates in their activities.
In addition, she is active in the professional organizations related to her field. Currently, she represents Nebraska in NAFSA, the association for international educators. While she continues to grow professionally, she also assists other professionals new to the field. This academic year, Corliss was responsible for the formation of a new honor society for international education on the campus. She did the necessary research and completed the necessary paperwork to establish a Phi Beta Delta chapter. The first members were initiated last November.
Corliss is also a team player who listens to advice from other International Education staff members and directs students to other branches of International Education, encouraging international students to sharpen their English skills through the English Language Institute (ELI) or to study abroad and experience the world.
