Department of the Month
June 2008
The UNK Staff Senate is pleased to recognized Chartwells as the June 2008 UNK Department of the Month.
Chartwells offers many opportunities for student employment. International students are limited to on-campus employment and Chartwells is the largest on-campus employer of international students. The willingness Chartwells has to give these students their first job helps them with acculturation and language ability, as well as monetary assistance. Chartwells offers scholarships to student employees and many of our international students have been awarded the Chartwells scholarship, which assists with tuition fees.
In addition, for the past 30 years, the International Student Association has presented the International Food and Culture Festival in the spring. This event is one of the largest student events on campus and is attended by 1,500 to 2,500 people from UNK and the Kearney community. At the festival, students perform traditional songs and dances, but the highlight is the cuisine they prepare from their home countries. Chartwells very graciously assists students with the preparation, transportation and presentation of food from around 25 countries. The students would be unable to coordinate this type of an event without the support of Chartwells and the Chartwells staff.
In addition, Chartwells has made an effort to adjust and update to the changing needs and desires of the student population by adding coffee shops, “quick stops” for student convenience and adjusting selections to appeal to all students.
The partnership between UNK and Chartwells benefits our students, the campus and the community. Staff Senate is pleased to recognize Chartwells as the June 2008 UNK Department of the month.
