Emergency Operations Team
UNK Department of the Month
May 2008
The UNK Staff Senate is privileged to recognize the Emergency Operations Team as the May 2008 UNK Department of the Month.
The mission of the Emergency Operations Team is to identify potential risk exposures to students, faculty, staff and campus visitors, find ways in which to reduce risk exposure where possible, and plan how to react and deal with potential emergencies. This is a wide charge and an important responsibility in identifying ways to keep our campus safe. The Team has set up sub-committees in the areas of Communications, Drills and Exercise, Training and Education, Evacuation, Emergency Plans, ID Cards, Avian Flu and Executive in order to handle various obligations. Members of the team are volunteers selected by administration and their supervisors who represent various departments on campus. The team and the sub-committees all meet on a monthly basis.
The Emergency Operations Team is an example of very busy people on our campus who take on those extra “duties” beyond their job description because of their commitment to the university. These are creative people who try to think of every type of exposure we may have and come up with ways to put emergency procedures to protect the campus in place.
The committee was established in 2002, therefore, various members of the group have attended training exercises and workshops provided by NEMA, Homeland Security, and the University System. They have in turn, set up exercises in clearing buildings with a SWAT team and campus-wide tornado and fire drills. The group has also set up Table Top Drills so that we can ensure the plans we have in place will work when faced with an emergency. Those table tops included a bomb-evacuation of east campus, a smallpox outbreak, pandemic flu outbreak, building collapse, a fire in a hazmat zone (BHS), a tornado and hazmat situation in the tunnels and civil unrest.
Because of their tireless work and commitment to ensure safety on campus the UNK Staff Senate is pleased to recognize the Emergency Operations Team as the May 2008 UNK Department of the month.
