Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council
UNK Department of the Month
April 2008

The UNK Staff Senate is privileged to recognize the Greek Community (specifically Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council) as the April 2008 UNK Department of the Month.  Through their many philanthropies and community service events, these men and women work very diligently to become the best community they can be.

These two councils have stepped up the challenge of becoming two of the best councils in the nation, as evidenced by living according to ritual.  While the word "ritual" has many different definitions to many different people, to a Greek member it means a secret ceremony where they learn about the significance behind their organization – some of which have been in existence for over 100 years.

The IFC and PHC councils have decided that the true meaning of "ritual" is our core values, the foundation of all Greek organizations.  It has been their mission to "Learn in, Live it, and Share it" to everyone on UNK’s campus.  Their organizations’ core values have been the guiding light in their councils’ leadership direction.  By focusing on their values, they have been able to lead the councils to new heights and achievements.  This past February each council, IFC and PHC, were awarded 3 national awards for their efforts.

The following events/ achievements were lead by our councils:

• Lopers Welcome Back Block Party
• 2007 Greek Leaders Academy (33 participants)
• IFC/PHC brought in national award winning speaker David Stollman to present “Buy In or Get Out”
• Scholarship Awards Banquet
• All Sorority GPA 3.15
• All Fraternity GPA 2.90
• Helping the Homeless
• Emergency Food Drive for the Nebraska Food Bank
• Ritual Movement
• Pledging to live and share the core values of Greek Life
• Expansion of our Greek Community
• Welcoming Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) as our new IFC fraternity
• Mid Greek Council Association awarded our Greek Community 6 national awards (last year they didn’t receive any awards)

The Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council are truly amazing leaders.  With their vision of leading by core values they are without a doubt setting the standards for all organizations.  As quoted by our IFC and PHC presidents "This semester, the Greek community is taking a sharper focus on our ritual and core values.  Service, scholarship, and social responsibility are the basis of our mission."  These men and women are challenging themselves and others to live up to the values of their organizations.

For all of their good works on behalf of themselves, their chapters, and the UNK community as a whole, the UNK Staff Senate is pleased to recognize the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils as the April 2008 UNK Department of the Month.

Thank you to the sponsors of the Department of the Month: UNK Athletics and Staff Senate.
