At the June 2009 Staff Senate meeting, the Senate voted in support of the need to improve the scope of the Employee and Department of the Month Awards. This decision came after much discussion regarding the need for key changes to be made in the function and formatting of these two very special awards.
As of August 1, 2009, the following changes became in effect:
- The Employee of the Month award will be named the Employee Achievement Award
- The Department of the Month award will be named the Recognition of Excellence Award
Much of the same criteria for both awards will remain, but the few changes include:
- The Employee Achievement Award will continue to be awarded on a monthly basis with preference given to the proximity of a significant event or recognition for which the employee is being honoree.
- The Recognition of Excellence Award will be awarded on an as-merited basis with the enhanced focus toward rewarding instances of overall campus excellence.
There will no longer be an arbitrary time limit between when an employee or department can be recognized with a respective award again, i.e. - in the past, if an employee received the award one year they could not receive the award again for five more years; a department was seven years. From now on, the re-awarding will be up to the discretion of the Staff Senate Recognition Committee.
