1999 Staff Award for Excellence

Presented by Chancellor Gladys Styles Johnston

Sharon Pelc - Director of the Nebraskan Student Union

Leiton "Swede" Anderson - Carpenter for Facilities

This year, we have created a new award to honor outstanding contributions made by our professional and support staff. For our initial awards, we have selected two individuals who are outstanding representatives of this university in helping us to carry out our mission to our students and to the citizens of Nebraska.

Sharon Pelc - Union Director.
First, I would recognize a woman who has been with the university for 20 years and who has served as Director of Financial Aids for three of those years. You, however, know Sharon Pelc much better as our highly accomplished Director of the Nebraskan Student Union. In addition to her many normal duties as Union Director, Sharon hosts many specialized projects and events in the evenings and on weekends. She is known far and wide for her attention to detail and planning. All who work with her are impressed by her efficiency, her pleasing personality, and her welcoming, accommodating demeanor. Sharon Pelc goes that necessary extra mile to help paint a positive picture of our university for many off-campus constituencies. I am happy to present a Staff Award for Excellence to Sharon Pelc.

Leiton "Swede" Anderson - Carpenter, Facilities.
Our other recipient today is no stranger to any of you, for he is very well known across campus and many of you ask for him by name when you need a skilled carpenter. And that person is Leiton Anderson. Did I say well known? Perhaps if I had said “Swede” Anderson, you would have known immediately of whom I was speaking. “Swede” has been a highly valued member of our maintenance department for 9 years. He personifies the qualities that we encourage in all of our personnel. “Swede” is motivated, conscientious, innovative, and friendly. And best of all, his wonderful sense of humor, his positive attitude, and his excellent skills make him a beloved member of our university community. I am delighted to present the Staff Award for Excellence to Leiton “Swede” Anderson.
