Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA)
UNK Department of the Month
July 2007
The UNK Staff Senate is pleased to recognize the work of the Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA) by naming them as the July 2007 UNK Department of the Month. MONA, home of the state’s official art collection since 1986 has a mission of educating everyone regarding the importance of art and art appreciation.
The staff at MONA accomplish this mission through a variety of methods, such as offering the learning days for schools where schools come to MONA and even hosting showings via distance education, hosting art day camps, conducting the “Mayhem to Marvels” class, teaching the Nuno felting workshop, hosting the “Sounds of Summer” series and Third Thursdays, conducting the ARTreach program where a traveling art exhibition takes MONA to Nebraska Communities, displaying art for the Governor's Art Show at Nebraskaland Days, and most recently, hosting the first Nebraska Wine and Jazz festival.
MONA partners with UNK faculty to have showings of faculty artwork, poetry readings, musical performances and many more activities to increase the public’s exposure to the arts. They even try to increase student awareness through the role they play in “Destination Downtown”, as part of Blue and Gold Welcome Week at the start of the Fall semester. Not only are their staff members involved in these activities but also a significant number of volunteers who offer their time to conduct tours, work in the gift shop, assist with fundraising, and serve in an advisory capacity.
As a result of their dedication in providing a deep appreciation of the arts to UNK, the community, and the state, the UNK Staff Senate is honored to recognize MONA as the July 2007 UNK Department of the Month!
