January 2007 Employee of the Month - Dawn Adams, Corporal, Public Safety

In the six years Corporal Adams has worked for the Department of Public Safety she has strived to do her best and is dedicated to learning everything there is to know about law enforcement, safety, and supervision. Whether it is completing her daily job tasks or conceptualizing the future of the Public Safety Department, Corporal Adams always keeps the bigger picture in mind and what is best for the University. Over and over again, she has put her personal needs or wants aside for the greater good of the Department and the University. If a shift needs covered due to an ill employee, or a special needs arises at the last minute, she will be there. If job duties need to be re-delegated due to importance of the issue or loss of staffing she will do it. Not only does she do it but she makes sure it is done as good as her main responsibilities. While doing this she never complains about the additional responsibilities.

Through her training and education Corporal Adams has strived to educate the campus community on how to protest themselves and their property. She has taught countless courses in SHARP (Sexual Harassment Assault Rape Prevention). RAPE (Rape Awareness Prevention and Education), Foundations, Operations ID, Drug Awareness, Alcohol Awareness and Work Place Violence.

In the last four years Corporal Adams has taken a leadership role with the department and now trains every new officer. Since that time, she has revamped the training process to include a more in-depth approach to the training and she is consistently getting compliments from the new hires on how they appreciate the time and effort she has put in to making sure they feel comfortable and are knowledgeable about the job they are doing. A great strength Corporal Adams has as a training officer is to lead by example. She constantly demonstrates, to both new and old employees alike, the proper dedication and commitment to duty through her actions in bother her daily work and life.

Another leadership responsibility Corporal Adams has taken on is scheduling for the department and overseeing all special events. She reviews all events on campus and makes sure we have the proper amount of security at these events. Since she has taken over this responsibility, UNK have a greater presence and over all a safer community. Finally, Corporal Adams shows perhaps her highest level of dedication to the University and the department through her involvement with investigations. Due to being a small department some employees only work night hours and it makes it difficult for them to complete their investigations in a timely manner. Corporal Adams consistently assists other employees, helping them get vital information for their investigations. Most recently Corporal Adams assisted another officer with his investigation ending in the arrest of three individuals and solving multiple burglary cases which spread over a six week time frame. She never asks what is in it for herself, rather she completes her job (and then some) because it is the right thing to do.

As a result of her hard work and dedication to duty, the UNK Staff Senate is honored to recognize Dawn Adams as the January 2007 UNK Employee of the Month.

The Employee of the Month is sponsored by: UNK Athletics, UNK Theater, Campus Cuts, Chartwells and the Antelope Bookstore.
