Because of their dedication in assisting non-English speaking international students to prepare for academic success at the University of Nebraska Kearney, the UNK Staff Senate is proud to recognize the English Language Institute as the January 2007 Department of the Month.
The English Language Institute began as a service to students from foreign universities with cooperative agreements with UNK. The original plan of the Institute was to provide the best English language and American culture program available at an affordable cost to enable students from sister institutions to study in the United States.
Although the Institute maintains that same spirit today, it is now open to all qualified students who wish to learn English at a mid-sized university where the focus is on teaching and learning in a safe, nurturing environment. The enrollment in the English Language Institute during the fall semester of 2006 is indicative of their success. There are currently 79 international students enrolled in ELI classes. These 79 students represented 10 different countries such as Saudi Arabia, Guatemala, Colombia, China, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Turkey, Taiwan, and Tajikistan. ELI subjects include "Reading," "Writing," "Speaking," and "Listening in English."
The staff members of the English Language Institute are committed and caring individuals who are dedicated to the success of their students. Congratulations to the English Language Institute for being named the January 2007 UNK Department of the Month.
