November 2006 UNK Department of the Month - Alumni Association
Since May 20, 1906, when the Alumni Association was first organized, they have worked to promote communication and interaction among the alumni, students, faculty, staff, administrators, and friends of the University of Nebraska Kearney.
On a day-to-day basis, the Alumni Association is a constant source of information regarding Kearney State College/University of Nebraska Kearney. They maintain specific alumni databases, statistical information, and overall alumni data as well. The Alumni Association continually serves as a vital link between the campus and our graduates.
In the fall of each year, the Alumni Association finds itself especially busy. In conjunction with Homecoming, they plan their annual alumni recognition banquet on the Friday evening before Homecoming Game Day; they advertise Homecoming activities through the "UNK Today" publication; they annually organize a large pre-game Homecoming barbeque for alumni, university friends, and special guests; and they host post-football game Homecoming receptions.
They also assist with coordinating the Alumni Association president (or a representative) to speak at each commencement ceremony and each spring they arrange for the "50-Year Class" to come back to the campus and participate in the spring commencement. This has proven to be a successful, very special event for the 50-year graduates, and requires no small amount of organization on the part of the Alumni Office staff.
Throughout the year, the Alumni Association organizes alumni receptions throughout the state of Nebraska and twice a year they hold major out-of-state reunions. They are also constantly working to develop new alumni chapters across the nation.
If all of this is not enough, the Alumni Association also publishes the "UNK Today" newspaper three times a year and is mailed to all the alumni of KSC/UNK. This is a major undertaking as UNK has more than 33,000 active alumni! The "UNK Today" publication provides a wealth of campus information as it keeps alums connected with their alma mater.
Finally, the Alumni Association sponsors the Student Alumni Foundation and coordinates the Distinguished Alumni Award, Distinguished Alumni Service Award, and the Athletic Hall of Fame.
For their commitment and dedicated service to the University of Nebraska Kearney and to the alumni of KSC/UNK, the UNK Staff Senate is proud to recognize the UNK Alumni Association as the November 2006 Department of the Month.
Thank you to Department of the Month sponsors UNK Athletics and UNK Staff Senate.
