October 2006 Employee of the Month - Chilene Black, Clerical Assistant III, Student Records and Registration
Chilene Black is a Clerical Assistant III in the Registrar’s Office. In this capacity, Chilene is responsible for all functions relating to the evaluation and data entry of all undergraduate transfer credit. Chilene makes sure that incoming transcripts for all currently enrolled and new transfer students are sent to the appropriate department for evaluation toward the student’s major. Chilene herself evaluates all courses as they apply to UNK general studies. Upon complete evaluation, at the beginning of each term, Chilene sends degree audits to all new transfer students so they know just how their transfer credits came to UNK prior to their early registration for the subsequent term. She also sends degree audits to new freshmen with transfer credit and re-admit students.
Chilene diligently prepares for four Transfer Orientation Days each year by making sure transfer credit is entered to SIS for all registrants and a student-specific packet with degree audit provided to each student who attends. Senior checks are another major responsibility of her position which she persistently and steadily accomplishes in a timely manner. Chilene performs her daily tasks all while being third in-line to answer the many routine phone calls that come to the Registrar’s Office. Even on very hectic days, Chilene interacts with students, parents, and faculty, both on the phone and in person, in a calm and appropriate manner. Chilene deliberately listens to their questions and concerns and takes the time required to respond to their needs with professional respect.
Chilene is very dependable, responsible, and follows established rules and procedures in her actions and decisions. Her daily work requires knowledge of UNK academic policies and institutional requirements such as residency, GPA minimums, senior hours, transfer credit policies, general studies, repeat courses, writing intensive and cultural diversity hours. When a situation falls in a gray area, Chilene always consults with appropriate others in the office to make sure answers from the Registrars Office remain consistent. She uses independent judgment daily and handles her responsibilities with a calm steadiness. Strict adherence to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is required in all these instances pertaining to student records. Chilene took it upon herself to attend a "Dealing With Difficult Behaviors" workshop to further develop her interaction skills and plans to participate in many more staff development opportunities.
For her outstanding service, Staff Senate is honored to recognize Chilene Black as the October 2006 UNK Employee of the Month.
The Employee of the Month is sponsored by: UNK Athletics, UNK Theater, Campus Cuts, Chartwells and the Antelope Bookstore.
