The March 2006 Department of the Month is UNK Athletics. UNK has been a shining star in the RMAC Conference and for the past ten years has been the recipient of the RMAC Wells Fargo Cup, the conference All Sports Trophy.
Many who come to UNK sporting events do not realize there is a group of hard working, dedicated people who perform many tasks to insure a safe and successful event. In addition to the teams and coaches, the events require setting up the facility, advertising, media relations, ticket selling, transportation, equipment, trainers, and other support staff. Additionally, the department has to check and double check on numerous items to be sure all NCAA rules and guidelines are followed.
UNK has been host to various tournaments during the past years, including the most successful Division II Women’s Elite Eight Volleyball Tournament in history. In the coming years, UNK has been selected to host the Divisional II National Championships for Wrestling in 2007, and Women’s Basketball in 2007 and 2008. The leadership, performance, and dedication of the Athletic Department are a major reason UNK has been successful in hosting national events.
