Michelle Cate, Secretary III for the Department of Industrial Technology (ITEC), has been chosen employee of the Month for December. Michelle, who serves as secretary to the department chair and 13 faculty members, is responsible for maintaining departmental records and files, monitoring the departmental budget, preparing purchase requisitions and supervising work-study students. She not only performs these responsibilities at the highest level, but goes well above and beyond the expectations of her position.
The industrial technology department is a somewhat diverse grouping of people, programs, laboratories and facilities. Michelle is able to address the multiple and varied requests from faculty and students, and yet maintain a sense of organization and composure. All tasks and requests are handled immediately and expeditiously. And she is a team player.
In circumstances that would cause most individuals to be less than accommodating, she is always cordial. Further, she is excellent at relating concepts and solving problems. Students often go to her for assistance. When they do, she always makes time to answer their questions or to refer them to the appropriate person. When they leave her office, they know they have encountered someone who cares, and they are satisfied that she will do all that she can for them. When she has to deliver information that students don't want to hear, she does so with kindness.
Michelle has a personality that generates the "service oriented" atmosphere that is the trademark of the industrial technology department. She consistently demonstrates an exceptional commitment of continuing service to the University through her work ethic, positive attitude and concern for students, faculty and others.
In addition, she takes advantage of opportunities to improve herself professionally by attending training sessions and seminars regarding Web page management, software upgrades and other skills important to her position. She consistently arrives early and leaves late—an indication of her dedication to the University as well as the level of importance and pride she places on her employment at UNK.
