The UNK Staff Senate Employee Recognition Committee announces Jon Wheeler as the UNK Employee of the Month for August 2002.
Jon Wheeler has been an Area Coordinator for the Department of Residential and Greek Life for two and a half years. Jon is a strong advocate for the university community. His duties include overseeing the operation of a 1200-student residence hall complex and coordinating the responsibilities of five hall directors, one assistant hall director, and 35 resident advisors.
Jon's vision has been for hall directors in his area to create student learning programs that span the entire semester. He is collaborating with the college deans to establish the Education and Business Learning Communities. Jon is involved in planning and implementing a new Service Learning Community in Martin Hall that will be introduced in the fall of 2002.
Jon has worked for the improvement of the UNK graduate student experience by authoring a proposal for the Department of Counseling and School Psychology. This proposal suggests changes in the Student Life program that are intended to strengthen students' academic programs. He has also developed syllabi for two new classes proposed for inclusion in the Students Affairs program. In addition, Jon has been instrumental in reviewing Students Affairs internships.
Colleagues describe Jon as optimistic and informative. In every instance, he assumes a quiet leadership role that earns great respect from those with whom he works. His involvement goes beyond his department as he serves as a speaker and liaison to other campus and professional organizations. He constantly strives to improve his knowledge and background in Student Life operations.
Because of his dedication to students, to colleagues, and to the wider UNK community, the University of Nebraska at Kearney is pleased to name Jon Wheeler as the Employee of the Month for August 2002.
