The UNK Staff Senate Employee Recognition Committee announces Valerie Vierk as the UNK Employee of the Month for June 2002.

Valerie Vierk began working at the University of Nebraska at Kearney in June of 1984. She has served as a secretary for the Psychology Department and as a co-secretary for both the Criminal Justice and Sociology Departments. In the fall of 1996, Valerie transferred to Copeland Hall to become a full-time Staff Secretary III for the Department of Sociology.

Ms. Vierk provides cheerful and courteous service to all faculty. In fact, she automatically thanks faculty members for placing work in her workbox! She is known for using sound judgment in responding to her countless daily office concerns. "Being responsible" is one of Val's outstanding strengths as noted by several colleagues.

Valerie makes it a point to get to know the name of each student who majors in sociology. She is student-friendly and students appreciate her concern about their lives outside of the campus borders. Val also maintains a very professional appearance and demeanor.

Accepting additional duties when the department hosts special meetings and conferences is one of Valerie's trademarks. Her department chair has referred to her as a "godsend" who reminds him when projects are due, is aware of processes, and can quickly retrieve information through her campus network.

Because of her dedication to students, to colleagues, and to the wider UNK community, the University of Nebraska at Kearney is pleased to name Valerie Vierk as the Employee of the Month for June 2002.
