The Staff Senate Employee Recognition Committee would like to congratulate Beverly Mathiesen as Employee of the Month for May 2002.

The Chancellor nominated her administrative assistant, Mrs. Beverly Mathiesen, for Employee of the Month. Ms. Mathiesen has many duties in the Office of the Chancellor. First, she serves as office manager. In that capacity she assures that all correspondence—whether letter, telephone, fax or e-mail—receive appropriate responses in a timely manner. She monitors deadlines for campus responses to the office and for fulfilling the requests of the University of Nebraska Central Administration for information. Beverly is in charge of the Chancellor's calendar. She schedules events and follows up with appropriate planning details. Not the least of her skills is her ability to make adjustments in appointment schedules, especially when some last-minute occurrence requires the Chancellor's attention elsewhere.

Beverly Mathiesen serves as a liaison for the Chancellor with the public. She greets guests to the office in a friendly, professional manner. When this is a first contact with someone, she puts that person at ease. This helps to ensure that meetings proceed in an amiable fashion.

Among the most important liaison tasks that she accomplishes very well are the creation and maintenance of cordial relationships with other professionals and their staffs, both from across the nation and locally. Among those are the Federal Reserve, the NCAA, AASCU, ACE, the Kellogg Foundation, the Drucker Foundation, and the Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce. Through her friendly, solicitous contacts, these people have a seemly and correct impression of the business nature of the university's many and varied wide-ranging relationships.

On campus, Bev is known for her quick smile, dancing eyes, and hearty chuckle. These important assets create an ambience of camaraderie that translates into a wonderful working environment. Faculty members, students and staff alike—as well as professionals throughout the University of Nebraska system, local and state government officials, alumni and friends of the university—often remark on her knowledge of the campus and her helpful assistance in securing information that is germane to their concerns and in giving responses that befit the questions posed.

Finally, Beverly Mathiesen coordinates all of out-of-town appointments for the office. She arranges ground and air transportation as appropriate, makes hotel reservations, and prepares detailed itineraries. This requires her to be highly adaptable as airlines may cancel or delay flights and some meetings often have important, but conflicting events scheduled at the same hour.

Given the excellence with which she performs her many duties and her willingness to stay late until they are done, Beverly Mathiesen has been selected as the Employee of the Month for May 2002.
