Jeanne Chamberlin is the first and only full-time secretary for the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems. As such, she established all office procedures and filing systems for the department. That included many creative department-specific considerations such as systems for reserving time on limited computer hardware platforms and for controlling the department's extensive software inventory. All that was complicated by the four separate conversions to new office automation hardware and software systems.
Jeanne has imporved upon UNK's routine office systems in several ways. She learned Access database software in order to set up an alumni mailing list, PageMaker in order to create the department's annual newsletter, Excel to provide accurate departmental budget reports, and HTML to maintain the department's web pages. She has constantly refined those capabilities and has added several additional database applications on her own initiative.
The department has engaged in a number of recruiting-oriented projects including production and distribution of the annual newsletter, coordinating three annual conferences for K-12 computer teachers, and two annual high school programming contests. Jeanne has been responsible for a large portion of the work for these projects, and it is due to her efforts that the conferences have been successful.
In addition to performing her assigned duties and finding additional ways to benefit the department, Jeanne has played a major role in each of the annual "Expanding Your Horizons" conferences at UNK. High school sponsors have commented very favorably on Jeanne's contribution to the success of this highly popular event.
Jeanne is very much a team player in the department. She has made many great suggestions for improvements as a member of the department's Facilities and Administration Team. She constantly looks for ways to save money to stretch the department's budget and is always ready to offer qualified assistance to all. Jeanne's rapport with students in the department is outstanding. Performing her daily work in a very high quality manner is routine for Jeanne. She takes the initiative to perform tasks without urging and is vigilant in her efforts to ensure that the department is represented in a high-quality manner.
Because of her enthusiasm and friendliness, and her commitment to the excellence of her department, the University of Nebraska at Kearney is proud to name Jeanne Chamberlin as the Employee of the Month for June 1999.
