Cherie Frerichs has worked for the Modern Languages Department since January 1998. Her nominator indicates that Cherie brings a positive attitude to the department every day. Always eager to find an answer to a question or a solution to a problem, Cherie contributes good ideas and seeks innovative ways to achieve goals and accomplish tasks. Using her artistic abilities, she helped faculty create attractive brochures for Study Abroad in Mexico and Study Abroad in France. She also updated a system for tracking majors and minors in the department. Her work proved that the department had 11 more majors and teaching subject endorsements than institutional records indicated. Definitely a self-motivated person, Cherie has gained the respect of faculty and students.
Only months after she began working in the Department of Modern Languages, Cherie ably assisted with the Foreign Language Fair, which attracts over 400 high school students to UNK. She took responsibility for preparing selected materials and organizing information sent by high school teachers. Her contributions were quite beneficial to faculty who planned a full day of activities for the students. Cherie was a strong team member who took a great deal of responsibility for the many details involved in that project. As faculty planned for the April 1999 Foreign Language Fair, Cherie demonstrated her value as a team player whose contributions were necessary for another successful fair.
Cherie's ability to do precise, thorough work is important to the chair. She has excellent technology skills and understanding, and can be counted on for support. When faculty returned to work after Spring Break 1998, they found that Cherie had changed the arrangement and appearance of the department office, adding color and variety. Cherie works successfully with a great variety of people, using good judgment in finding ways to assist faculty and students. She supervises student workers effectively and also provides secretarial support for the Philosophy Program.
Because of her dedication to her work, her positive contributions to morale in her department, and her teamwork attitude, the University of Nebraska at Kearney is pleased to name Cherie Frerichs Employee of the Month for May 1999.
