Staff Senate congratulates the UNK Women's Basketball Team 's commitment to excellence which earned the team the highest cumulative grade point average (3.723) for the 2002-03 academic year for all NCAA, NAIA and junior college programs. The achievement was announced in October by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
Each season, the WBCA names an Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for each division, based on nominations by member head coaches. The GPA's in the given academic terms are calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by each student-athlete on an institution's squad list by the total number of hours the team earned. The GPA's are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point.
In seven of the last nine years, UNK has had one of the top five team GPA's in NCAA Division II, but this is the first time the Lopers have led NCAA Division II, not to mention the nation.
"This achievement shows how hard our student-athletes work," UNK Head Coach Carol Russell told the WBCA. "Our team dedicates themselves on and off the court. Academics are our top priority, and I'm very proud of them (the team)."
Staff Senate and the University are also very proud and take this opportunity to say: "Thanks for a job well done. Congratulations on your academic achievement and on being recognized for your commitment to excellence for the month of November."
