The Employee Recognition Committee of Staff Senate would like to congratulate Information Technology Services for the October 2003 Department of the Month award.

Information Technology Services (ITS) is the Department of the Month for October. The busiest months of the year for ITS are August through October when the Helpdesk routinely handles more than 3,600 inquiries. This year, as the result of Windows 2000/XP vulnerability, and the Blaster and Welchia worms, the number of calls will be well above the average.

When the operating vulnerability was identified by the ITS staff, their proactive efforts helped minimize the effects of Blaster and Welchia for most of the campus. For students living on campus, the ITS staff visited each residence hall, going room-to-room to help students install the operating patch to control the spread of Blaster and Welchia, clean up infected machines and set up anti-virus software. On many campuses across the nation, students were charged for these services. At UNK, the students received this service free.

Throughout the year, ITS assists faculty, staff, administrators and students by understanding the business and technology needs of the campus, by offering technology leadership, and by providing high quality, reliable, cost effective services, support and products to satisfy those needs.

The ITS staff includes 25 full-time and seven part-time employees. Among the divisions within ITS are: Support Network and System Services, Application Development and Operations, Technology Resource Acquisition and Client Services, which includes the Helpdesk, Training, Multimedia Support, Systems Specialists, Connections and the Webmaster.

Staff Senate thanks Information Technology Services for the valuable services they provide to the campus and recognizes them as Department of the Month for October 2003.
