The Employee Recognition Committee of Staff Senate would like to congratulate Health Sciences for the July 2003 Department of the Month award.
The Department of Health Science offers programs in nineteen different health related areas, which fall into two distinct categories: degree programs and pre-professional programs. A Bachelor of Science is offered in Radiography, Medical Technology, Respiratory Therapy and Health Sciences. The pre-professional programs include medicine, physical therapy, physician assistant, pharmacy, dentistry, dental hygiene, chiropractic, osteopathy, podiatry, radiologic technology, optometry, mortuary science, occupational therapy, cardiovascular perfusion, health information management and nuclear medicine technology.
The Department of Health Science makes a major contribution to our students and UNK. With only two full-time employees, Director, Peggy Abels and Secretary, Connie Mitchell, much is accomplished in recruiting, advising 360 students in the health science area and assisting students with admission for professional schools and programs. Other activities of the department include, teaching a fall health course, providing a pre-med workshop every January, hosting the Health Careers Fair in October, participating in the annual Healthquest at Good Samaritan Hospital, and coordinating the Kearney campus NU PATHS program for minority students and much more.
Peggy and Connie work very hard to build the necessary relationships with the professional schools and clinical programs in which the students are placed. The overall acceptance rate for the UNK students has been approximately 70% over the past ten years. For the excellent work of the Department of Health Science in recruiting and helping student succeed in the health professions, representing UNK to a broad constituency and getting a great deal accomplished with very few people Staff Senate is pleased to announce the Health Sciences Department as July Department of the Month.
