The Staff Senate at the University of Nebraska at Kearney would like to congratulate the Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Leisure Studies (HPERLS) Department for becoming the July 2002 Department of the Month.
HPERLS has many significant accomplishments throughout the academic year. However, some of the recent achievements for this department have involved summer related program and programs offered to the campus community.
- National Youth Sports Program
This is a program operated by HPERLS during the summer. NYSP is a free, five-week camp for socio-disadvantaged children ages 10-16. The camp offers sporting and education activities for over 200 boys and girls.
- Health Assessments & Testing
The performance lab offered a week of health assessments & testing for staff on campus as part of the Health & Wellness Task Force commitment to health.
- Community Olympics
The HPERLS become the PERLS during the annual Community Olympics and sponsor a team to compete in activities during the four-day event. The team is made up entirely of UNK employees and family members. Just yesterday the PERLS won FIRST place in the Community Olympics for 2002.
