Staff Senate Minutes - September 19, 1996
The meeting was called to order at 10:07 a.m.
Present: Alta Fread, Cel Davis, Anita Kucera, Jean Mattson, Carleen Jurgensen, Kathy Livingston, Mike Heffernan, Judy Spellman, Bill Davis, Judy Willett, John Lakey.
Absent: Glennis Nagel
Guest: Terry Fraley
Kathy Livingston gave an election update. Ballots will be sent out today and are due back next Thursday (9/26). The committee will meet on Friday (9/27) at 12:30 p.m. to count ballots. Results will be reported to Chancellor Johnston. The ballots will be printed on colored paper with an eagle stamp to prevent ballot stuffing. For this election, the calling of nominees was done solely by the election committee. The Staff Senate agreed that in the future, other members would help with the calling. Approximately 2/3 of those nominated accepted the nomination. The committee was asked to draw up a how to list to help future election committees. It was suggested that all committees do this. The Chancellor will notify those who are elected. A letter will be drafted for the Chancellor's signature. At the same time, letters will be sent to Staff Senate members notifying them of those elected. Letters will also be sent to those who were not elected thanking them for accepting the nomination. Kathy Livingston will coordinate the letter writing. The first meeting for new members will be in November. Cel Davis introduced Terry Fraley, who will replace her as Office/Service Advisory Council representative.
The next meeting will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 17, in the Zikmund Conference Room of HPER. The day and/or time may change when new people join the Senate. Cel Davis, Jean Mattson, Alta Fread and Bill Davis will be leaving the Senate after the October meeting.
Members of Staff Senate volunteered for various committees. New members will be asked to volunteer after elections. Committee on Committees will appoint members if needed to make sure committees are balanced. Committees will need to meet to establish goals and directives for the year and to decide when and how often they should meet. The committees and their volunteers are as follows:
- Committee on Committees (all returning members)
- Election Committee (Mike Heffernan, Carleen Jurgensen, Judy Willett)
- Employee Recognitions Committee (Kathy Livingston, Judy Willett)
- Executive Committee (Senate Chair, Vice-Chair and Secretary -- to be determined after officers are elected)
- Performance Management Committee (Mike Heffernan, Kathy Livingston, Terry Fraley)
- Procedures Committee (Carleen Jurgensen)
- Professional Development Committee (Judy Spellman, Terry Fraley, Judy Willett)
Cel Davis suggested that Staff Senate could investigate the possibility of setting up a scholarship fund similar to the Office/Service Employees Dependent Scholarship for the dependents of Managerial/Professional and Non-Academic Directors. Discussion ensued. Cel will provide Anita Kucera with information regarding the formation of the Office/Service scholarship. The meeting was adjourned at 11:10 a.m.
