Staff Senate Minutes - July, 1996

Present: Bill Davis, Cel Davis, Terry Fraley, Mike Heffernan, Carleen Jurgensen, Anita Kucera, John Lakey, Kathy Livingston, Jean Mattson, Glennis Nagel and Judy Spellman.

Absent: Judy Willett.

Staff Senate met with Chancellor Gladys Styles Johnston for the review and approval of the organization's proposed name and bylaws. Chancellor Johnston gave her approval for the organization's proposed name and bylaws as they were presented to her.

In her comments to the Senate, Chancellor Johnston emphasized that the purpose of Staff Senate is to provide a forum for staff concerns: "Staff Senate is to be the eyes and ears of the university. To bring to the attention of the administration issues that the administration may not be addressing...a place where things can bubble up."

"The Chancellor knows least about what is going on on campus, because everything is filtered. By the time it gets to my level, I tend to get a lot of good news."

She further suggested that the group meet periodically with members of the administration, including the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

Staff Senate concerns regarding the need to include staff in campus activities had been brought to the attention of Earl Rademacher, Vice Chancellor for Business and Fincance, and he had then shared those concerns with Chancellor Johnston. In the meeting, Chancellor Johnston said that staff would now be invited to the fall picnic and the Faculty/Staff Convocation. However, she stipulated that "...people can go to the convocation as long as all offices are open and someone is available in the offices to answer questions."
