Staff Senate Minutes - January 16, 1997

Staff Senate was called to order at 10:00 a.m. in the Zikmund Conference Room.

Present: Sue Betterman, Mike Heffernan, Carleen Jurgensen, Anita Kucera, John Lakey, Kathy Livingston, Glennis Nagel, Jane Sheldon, Judy Spellman and Judy Willett.

Absent: Marilyn Andersen, Sue Downey and Terry Fraley.

Sympathy Card - A sympathy card was signed by Staff Senate members for Barbara Stevenson whose husband David passed away.

Staff Senate Brochure - A draft of the Staff Senate brochure was presented by Judy Spellman. Suggestions were made for revisions. Judy will make the changes and then provide the revised copy to Staff Senate chair Anita Kucera for her review/approval.

Meeting Time - Staff Senate will now meet regularly on the third Tuesday of each month in the Zikmund Conference Room of the Health and Sports Center. The next Staff Senate meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 18.

Connections Program - Judy Willett reported on the Connections Program, which she and several Staff Senate members attended. She shared her observations and recommended it as a worthwhile program for Staff Senate members and others. John Lakey invited Staff Senate members to participate.

Employee of the Month - Staff Senate has been designated as the group to select the "Employee of the Month." Staff Senate will present the monthly award to the recipient during the Staff Senate meeting. Gary Gibbons was announced as the January Employee of the Month. He and his supervisor, Jim Tiedeman, attended the meeting, and Gary was presented the award. The selection and award process will be the responsibility of the Staff Senate Employee Recognition Committee. Senate members were asked to keep the selection confidential until the official announcement is made.

Report to the Chancellor - There was a brief discussion about the Staff Senate's annual report to the chancellor. The group determined that the letter from the chair and the resulting meeting of the Chancellor with the group in the Warner Conference Room would meet the bylaws requirement of an annual report to the Chancellor. Among the notable achievements/activities of the group was representation of the Staff Senate on key campus committees--budget, strategic planning, marketing--as well as the search committee for the vice chancellor for business and finance.

ADA-American Disabilities Act Committee - Trish Kenagy, Sue Peterson, John Lakey and Ron Smith serve on the committee and they are wanting to expand membership. Glennis Nagel volunteered to represent Staff Senate on the committee.

President Smith's Visit - President Smith was scheduled on campus January 20, and was to meet with Faculty Senate and Student Senate. Staff Senate chair Kucera said that she was meeting with Chancellor Johnston on January 24 and would discuss the Staff Senate's inclusion in future visits.

Goals and Objectives - Committees were asked to come to the next meeting with their goals and objectives for the coming year.

Next Meeting - Staff Senate will meet 9:30-11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 18, in the Zikmund Conference Room.
