The February 2006 Department of the Month is Parking Services. The department consists of five individuals who perform a variety of tasks, which include issuing parking decals for vehicles, maintaining and enforcing parking policies and procedures, and insuring all parking lots are properly marked and maintained. They interact with all students, staff, the general public, and support the Public Safety Department.
Parking Services plays an important role at events held on campus. At various events the department places cones and barricades where needed and directs traffic to the proper parking areas. This ensures safe movement of vehicles and pedestrians in campus parking areas.
Each day, Parking Services has the task of interacting with numerous individuals. On some occasions, the individuals are upset. One person, who has observed some of these interactions, commented that they were very impressed with the professional and calm manner in which the Parking Services staff handled the situations. Even when dealing with someone who is being abusive, loud, and threatening, the staff remains calm and continues to explain the situation in a normal and professional voice.
